Flow manufacturing plays a vital role in throughput time reduction and elimination on non value adding activities through Kaizen.<\/p>\r\n<p>There are seven key requirements for Flow manufacturing:<\/p>\r\n<p><b>1. Continuous flow production line:<\/b>\u00a0This means arranging the production processes (and the\u00a0production equipment) into a line or a U-shaped cell. To implement continuous flow or cellular manufacturing, you must learn concept of takt time and line balancing<\/p>\r\n<p><b>\u00a02. Compact specialized and general-purpose equipment:\u00a0<\/b>Costs can be kept down by installing smaller, slower, andmore specialized production equipment. However, some general-purpose equipment is also needed to facilitate flexible line reorganization. Elephant or large equipmemt may look attractive, as they can handle a lot of products at a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ribcon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cellular-Manufacturing-400x240-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignright alignnone size-full wp-image-6390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ribcon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cellular-Manufacturing-400x240-1.png 400w, https:\/\/www.ribcon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cellular-Manufacturing-400x240-1-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/> time, but are a big obstruction to flow because inventory will always accumulate at these equipments<\/p>\r\n<p><b>3. One-piece flow:\u00a0<\/b>This means that each process should handle only oneworkpiece unit from the time processing of that work-piece is begun until it is finished. One piece flow is generally most difficult to achieve in flow manufacturing but yields highest results. Yamazumi charts and standard work are key tools to achieve one piece flow<\/p>\r\n<p><b>4. Cycle time\u00a0:\u00a0<\/b>This refers to the need to synchronize processes to keep\u00a0pace with client needs and the needs of the next process. Cycle times must always be balanced to TAKT time to support flow manufacturing<\/p>\r\n<p><b>5. Multi-process handling\u00a0:\u00a0<\/b>This is a labor arrangement in which one worker movesfrom process to process down the line and handles multiple processes.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>6. Multi-skilled workers\u00a0<\/b>: This entails training workers in the skills needed formulti-process handling.\u00a0To achieve mutli skilling, skill matrix and tools like TWI ( Training within industry) are key<\/p>\r\n<p><b>7. Standing (chair-free) operations\u00a0:\u00a0<\/b>An important improvement in work posture is changing\u00a0from sitting to standing, enabling worker mobility. Standing operation is generally a big challange in african and asian countries, where people are psychologically confortable in sitting operations.
